This year’s venture will encompass an even larger area to explore and conquer as we make our way from the Northern Maine area thru NH and back into Western Maine. Along the way you will surpass many towns and attractions that the Great State of Maine and New Hampshire are known for.
We have set the bar higher this year and intend to vastly improve on this adventure every year and try to incorporate a lot of the feedback from the attendees of MOTL '14 & '15 have provided. This years tour will bring us through the immensely popular and scenic region of Western Maine, a hot spot for tourists and the like to bask in an area well known for its wildlife, waterfalls and overlooks. This area provides a plethora of awe inspiring mountainous views and we intend to bring you there!
The trip starts near Maine’s very own North Maine Woods, a 3.5 Million acre working woodland that offers vast exploration through miles and miles of tote roads, two tracks, and logging roads. The trip will allow for time to explore and provide valuable insight to some of the most rustic areas Maine & New Hampshire has to offer.
Northeast Overland will provide the coordinates and routes, and you will provide the adventure. Our trips encompass the primitive use of whatever means necessary to get to the evenings stop point, whether that be with paper maps or high end electronics, but the KISS method is always HIGHLY suggested. The area is vast and the day’s activities and plans can change at the spur of the moment due to weather, vehicular breakage or an ill equipped rig unable to conquer the terrain that has been set forth for you. This makes the balance between what man and machine needs even more crucial, which can be a challenge all in of itself.
We look forward to another great trip on the trails and hope you do as well. Please join us and let us show you an area unlike many others in this nation!

What to Expect: We will be traveling mostly on well-built logging roads and some old grown-in roads (Some more closely resemble ATV trails). 4WD is required, bring something with high ground clearance and skid plates. This area is very remote and that needs to be respected. Complete self-reliance is to be expected. This is why we are doing teams. This is for your safety.
Small trees on the side of the trail have been encroaching over the years, and "pin striping" is likely, especially with a larger vehicles.
Inter-rig communication will be by CB radio. Channels will be assigned Wednesday evening. Ham radio operation is encouraged.
Expect to be sharing some of the roads with large over-sized, over-weight, speeding logging trucks that will not move from the center of the road. A GPS used incorrectly can send one off-course. Cell phone coverage is sketchy at best and is rendered near useless in Northern Maine and cannot be relied upon 100%. Other navigation tools: a 2013 or newer Delorme Maine Atlas and Gazetteer, a compass, and/or daily maps/coordinates given to participants.
Generally the dirt roads can be very dusty if dry or very muddy if wet (surface only, from the wet dust/silt. Think slushy). Some of the lesser quality side roads may have very poor and unstable surfaces (read: you will sink to your frame before you can say "oops!"). Mud terrain tires are preferred due to the terrain, though a fairly aggressive All Terrain tires will suffice. 30" - 33" are the norm. We recommend you bring two spare tires...flat tires are not unheard of. Expect some rough rocky trails here and there, some very limited-use roads, and the potential for plentiful wildlife through-out the trip.
Camping will be point-to-point style, meaning that we will be in a different location each night... please plan accordingly. The first night will be Northwest of Greenville (Maine Gazetteer map 41). Plan to stop to get last minute supplies and top off the fuel on Wednesday late afternoon in Greenville. Last, last minute fuel can be topped off in Rockwood.
Fuel (gas & diesel) and food available in Greenville at market price and Pittston Farms sells gas-o-line at slightly above market price. Gasoline can be had each day along the provided route, along with a few provisional stops.
