Christmas Tree(s) Shoppin' Empty Christmas Tree(s) Shoppin'

Post by MtnClimber Fri Nov 29, 2013 11:06 pm

Curious as to when people get their Christmas tree(s). I thought it'd be a fun trip up for a bunch of us to get together and go Christmas tree shopping...in the woods. I remember as a kid riding in the back of my parents Jeep, we'd go bird hunting up North and come back with a tree. My mom would always find a great looking tree...30 feet up..

Is anybody interested in doing such a trip? For people further away (I'm in Maine), maybe get to together with other fellow Overlanders near you and we could have regionals Very Happy

Christmas is less than a month away and it'd be fun to explore some dirt roads. And since we're usually looking around anyways, we might as well not come home empty handed!!

EDIT: This year's event will take place on Sunday December 13, 2015
Meet at the Jay, Maine McDonald's at 9am sharp. Plan to eat lunch in the woods or if time allows (history proves it has), in Rangeley at an eatery to be decided amongst those that are going.
For those that are going please make sure you have, at minimum, a good working CB. Please look over the other rides 'Recommended Equipment' to see what you may need in general as this ride will be taking place in the back country. Thanks

Sign us up! We go for the charlie browns anyways, may as well partake in the slaughter Laughing

I'll run my schedule out in a bit, but I believe I have 12/11-17 off, perhaps we can find a date in that range. I also have 12/5-7 off, however that's reserved for last weekend at camp before they close the gates for vehicles and open it to sleds.

Sure thing Muffin! Since Greg & Ann, Muffin and family can go on this date, let's all plan for it!
Greg, since your in Northern NH, would the Rangeley area be a good rendezvous point for you?

Rangley would be great. I'd say it's about 1.5 hours from me just because you can't get there from here. What time would you like to meet?

Saaay, somewhere between 9 and 10? I'll let the furthest peeps decide on the time (thinking Greg and Muffin), I'm only 'bout 65 minutes away.

9 works for us. Are we eating prior to arriving or getting something there? I just mapped it t, were actually 2:17 away... I guess the 1.5 was optimistic lol.

So 9 am it is. Let's plan on meeting at the Loony Bin Variety on 2775 Main St (Irving fuel/Arctic Cat dealership). There's coffee, fuel, a bathroom, deli, and a light breakfast fare there. Then we can roam around in the woods shopping for that fabulous tree. Semi-late lunch back in Rangeley say around 1-2pm. Sarges has great food as well as Parkside Restaurant.

How many trucks do you want to limit this to? I've got a couple guys from NH that I want to introduce to the club if their available.

Lat year we had 4 trucks, a decent size group for where we are potentially going. I'd think 4 is ideal, 6 is comfortable, and 8 would be maximum. If we get more than that we'll just split up as we venture down roads/two-tracks; "You four go that way, the other 5 will go this way."

Just a thought, do we need to purchase a permit through Maine to take a tree? And for what it's worth, we're up for exploring... Will have tire chains and expect to have to work a little for the tree.

So checking with NOAA and the current snowpack depth amounts for the Rangeley area reveals there is approximately 8-16" of snow in every spot we'd be exploring in. Crosstown Rd runs between the two lakes centered in the pic, and below the right side lake (Rangeley Lake). Some of these roads are now utilized as snowmobile trails, some of which are ITS trails. The town of Rangeley is on the top right corner of the righthand lake.

This weeks forecast promises more snow, possibly a Nor'Easter.....
