What to Expect: We will be traveling mostly on well-built logging roads and some old grown-in roads. 4WD is required, bring something with decent ground clearance (we're talking 6-8" plus). Some of the area to be covered is very remote and that needs to be respected. No cell service, no parts stores, complete self-reliance.
Generally the roads can be very dusty if dry or very muddy if wet especially in the spring (surface only, from the wet dust/silt. Think slushy). Some of the lesser quality side roads may have very poor and unstable surfaces. Mud terrain tires are preferred due to the terrain, though a fairly aggressive All Terrain tires will suffice. 30" - 33" are the norm. Flat tires are not unheard of so please make sure your tires have a sufficient amount of tread and all are in good condition. During the May ride, many of the roads may still be in disrepair due to the harsh winter conditions. Washed out culverts and smartcar sized potholes are to be expected. Speeds will be 25 mph+ on secondary dirt roads and 40-45 mph can be easily done on the higher grade dirt roads.
In the NMW, expect to be sharing some of the roads with large over-sized, over-weight, speeding logging trucks that will not move from the center of the road. Cell phones are generally useless in the NMW and cannot be relied upon. Other navigation tools: a 2013 or newer Delorme Maine Atlas and Gazetteer, DeLorme inReach, and/or the ole compass. Inter-rig communication will be by CB radio. We will all be using channel 16. Ham radio operation is encouraged.
Ride Fees: Non-refundable donation of $50 per vehicle (not per person!). Registration and tickets can be purchased by sending a PayPal payment to northeastoverland@gmail dot com . Half of the proceeds will go to the Travis Mills Foundation. There is only a 10 vehicle limit for each weekend, so be sure to get your spot early! Please specify which weekend you'd like to attend to avoid confusion
