5th Annual Christmas Tree Run Empty 5th Annual Christmas Tree Run

Post by MtnClimber Sun Nov 05, 2017 12:40 pm

Altho it's been rather unseasonably warm lately, it's time to start thinking about getting your Christmas tree! It's always fun to get out in the woods, even when there's snow and ice on the grounds. We've many different sized vehicles join us on this free adventure, however something with adequate ground clearance and seasonal equipped tires are a must! We plan on visiting a local tree farm to legally acquire our Christmas tree's.

For your comfort and safety, this free ride is limited to only 10 trucks (not including Chris & Jareb in their Toyota's). This is a first come, first serve ride. If you're definitely going, just post up saying so! If you're not sure yet, you're not on the list til you're 100% positive. Thanks for understanding  Cool

What: Northeast Overland's 5th Annual Christmas Tree Ride

    When: Saturday, December 9th, 2017

    Where: Western Maine

Meeting Location: McDonald's parking lot area in Jay, Maine (Rt 4) (Subject to change if necessary). Driver's meeting to commence around 9am

What to bring: Your street legal and well maintained 4WD vehicle, warm clothing, basic extrication equipment, food & water, spare parts/tools/knowledge, camera/batteries, etc.

    Required Equipment:
     • Five (5) 31" or bigger AT or MT tires & tools to change a flat (this means a full-size spare (5 of the same size))
     • Front and rear tow points
     • Properly tuned & working CB radio
     • Fire extinguisher
     • First aid kit; sufficient for the amount of people in your vehicle
     • 2013 or newer Maine Atlas & Gazetteer
     • At least one GPS per vehicle (handheld or street)
     • Basic tool kit for your vehicle

Recommended Equipment (in addition to the required list):
     • Tire repair kit, and/or compressor
     • Winch or come-along
     • Vehicle specific parts + tools
     • Warm clothing & rain/snow gear
     • Tire Chains and/or traction aiding devices
     • Spade shovel, Hi-Lift, straps (no hooks on the straps and absolutely no chains!)
     • Toilet paper
     • Bring an article of blaze orange... We want you to be found if you wander off. Plus it's bird hunting season..

What to Expect: We will be traveling mostly on well-built logging roads and some old grown-in roads with some tar in between. 4WD is required, bring something with decent ground clearance (we're talking 6-8" plus). Some of the area to be covered is very remote and that needs to be respected. Spotty cell service is to be expected as well.

    Ride Fee: FREE!!  Very Happy

    Those in Attendance for 2017:
    Likeamokey (Nick)
    strangerranger (Mason)
    jjgbpd (Chris's friend)
    BosRdSx (no idea)

History shows we usually have some sorta snow and/or ice to combat with, so please be prepared santa

5th Annual Christmas Tree Run Empty 31" really needed

    Post by 90XSOverland Thu Nov 09, 2017 9:05 am

    Hi All,

First, thank you all for the inspiration to get out and enjoy more of what the beautiful northeast offers. It is a pleasure seeing and reading about your adventures, and I hope to join you in the coming year.

My question is, are 31" tires really necessary? I run 235/75r15s and already have a minimum clearance of 8.5" (bottom of leaf springs - under axle) with those. Even airing down I'm still going to have over 7" even at the rear diff. Upsizing to 31" tires would be a significant investment that I'm not convinced I need. I have taken this vehicle as it is over some severe terrain, equal to or worse than what I've seen in many of your videos, pictures without issue.

So, do tell me how rigid this 31" requirement is. I'd rather spend that money on another trip.

    Best,
    MRS
