For fee schedule and other information, check out the North Maine Woods website
What to Expect: We will be traveling mostly on well-built logging roads and some old grown-in roads (Some more closely resemble ATV trails). 4WD is required, bring something with high ground clearance and skid plates. This area is very remote and that needs to be respected. No cell service, no parts stores, complete self-reliance. We will be travelling in one group, possibly two to three depending on the dust conditions. This is for your safety. Generally the roads can be very dusty if dry or very muddy if wet (surface only, from the wet dust/silt. Think slushy). Some of the lesser quality side roads may have very poor and unstable surfaces (read: you will sink to your frame before you can say "oops!"). Mud terrain tires are preferred due to the terrain, though a fairly aggressive All Terrain tires will suffice. 31" - 33" are the norm. We highly recommend that you bring two spare tires...flat tires are not unheard of.
Expect to be sharing some of the roads with large over-sized, over-weight, speeding logging trucks that will not move from the center of the road as this is their territory. A GPS used incorrectly can send one off-course. Please familiarize yourself with whatever you will be using. Cell phones are useless in Northern Maine and cannot be relied upon. Other navigation tools: a 2013 or newer Delorme Maine Atlas and Gazetteer, a handheld GPS, a compass can always come in handy to find your back to the rig after a session of "nature calls"..
Daily routes will be gone over at every driver's meeting around supper time each evening. Plan on being in the woods from Thursday night to Sunday mid-mernin. We'll be going through civilization Sunday then back in the woods one more time for Sunday night camping. Plan on parting ways Monday mid-mernin in Greenville, Maine.
Inter-rig communication will be by CB radio on Channel 16. Please have your antenna's tuned for optimum distances! This could be crucial if the roads become dusty and we need to spread out in between vehicles. Ham radio operation is also encouraged. Please let us know if you'll be hamming it up on this trip!
