Re: Christmas Tree(s) Shoppin'
Yup this might be interesting! Right now depending on the forecast, we're looking at anywhere from 6-10" Tuesday nightish, and an additional 4" on Thursday. The ol' chains will get a workout! If anyone is running 265/70r17, or up to a 33" pizza cutter, I have an extra set of chains you could use. They might fit a 285 - 33", I haven't tried yet.

Heh, the picture isn't working on my computer either, however I could see it on the phone. The chains should be able to fit those tires, Jareb, as mine are 255/80/17, which is about 10x33. It's amazing how much they help!

That's very kind of you to offer up use of tire chains.
Be aware that early-season snow pack can be very soft and may now support (hold up) a vehicle. I have seen Late January snow in this region hold up the weight of a 4000 pound jeep and a 4500 pound ZR2. Once the passenger stepped out, he sank up to his crotch. Tire chains can give you phenomonal traction, but you can still sink to your frame.

Re: Christmas Tree(s) Shoppin'
Yup, anything more than 2 feet and I'd want to be certain I have a good backup plan! We had about 14" leaving camp Sunday, and on a trail that I had traveled twice on Friday, and once on Saturday, I still had to work a bit on one of the climbs (lock the rear end, with chains on and I clawed up it).
I've got no idea what we're in for on Saturday, but I'll have my recovery straps, tire chains, come along, and high lift w/ accessories in case we decide to explore a bit (which I'm all for). If I don't need the equipment, no worries. It lives in the FJ year round.

Hey it'll be an adventure. If it's a bust, no worries, tons of tree farms around.

Re: Christmas Tree(s) Shoppin'
I'm not sure about up north, but so far in Whitefield the storm has been a bust. We were slated for 8-12 through Thursday, after about 3" things switched over to freezing rain. If Rangeley is in the same boat, conditions may not be too bad...

Re: Christmas Tree(s) Shoppin'
As of 10pm last night they had 8"+ of fresh falling snow and it was still coming down heavy..
EDIT: Rangeley reporting in w 9" last night (of snow.....) Sleet forecasted for today. Think I'll bring my snowshoes with me too. Maybe pack the winch so Muffin isn't the only one haha

Cool. Looks like across the map, NH was missed. Well, Ann and I are still a go, we don't mind a bit of an adventure.

Re: Christmas Tree(s) Shoppin'
I'll have my come along, it's pretty handy! We'll also bring our snow shoes, and I think I'm going to bring a sled... just in case the tree needs to be moved a bit... with the two dogs, hopefully it won't take much back work

Re: Christmas Tree(s) Shoppin'
Well I never made it due to the forecasted 50% chance of 1" or less of snow during the overnight hours...which turned into 3" of snow at 0600 and 4.5" of snow at 0730... So off I went to plow for the whooole day. Total accumulations for Wayne were 6" of snow, and as it warmed up thru-out the day it became slightly wet 'n heavy. Perfect for making snowmen.
So I contacted Muffin around 0615 and discussed w him my predicament. He said too bad for you, have fun, we're still going
From the sounds of it (on social media), Greg mentioned "Tire chains were needed for one road we explored" and Muffin 'n company had success finding a tree.......He also mentioned that "There was about 16-18", with about 3" of crust. There was some pretty solid ice on the trees to boot. The only casualty was my pants, so we further supported the local economy by getting new pants before lunch!"
I'm sure Muffin and Greg will report back with better details and pictures

Re: Christmas Tree(s) Shoppin'
we arrived at the meeting place at 9am surprising after getting behind every plow truck between unity and rangley. Greg and Ann were already there so i topped off the taco and went inside to meet up with them we mapped out a route trying to make a loop up above rangley and back. The dirt roads we went on were mostly plowed but pretty bumpy we decided to take a road that was not plowed
and the taco was breaking trail there was 12+inches of snow with about 3 inches of crust that made it pretty hard going after getting stuck once and Greg gave me a tug we decided to put the chains on and Greg took point we made it a couple of miles in and decided that it was a good time to turn around by looking at the map it would take us about 4 or 5 hours to get though the road as it was already 11 oclock we headed back to plowed roads and finished our loop and had a late dinner back in rangley (after a small wardrobe malfunction ) Greg and Ann were great company and hopefully we will be able to do some more wheeling with them in the future. So finally heres some pics just click on the pic for more
