Northeast Overland's Makin' Bacon Adventure Empty Northeast Overland's Makin' Bacon Adventure

Post by Admin Sun Mar 15, 2015 3:52 pm

Who doesn't like bacon, right? Canadian bacon is very delicious so why not go and get some from Canada! That's the plan, with Muffin and MtnClimber leading the way! The main idea is to drive into Canada for some bacon (Canadian bacon of course) and enjoy it in the good ole US of A. Alot of high speed dirt roads, fishing along the way, and some challenges will occur. We'll meet up at Pittston Farms on Thursday night and camp right there for night one. From there we'll travel through the great North Maine Woods for a few days up to Estcourt Station where we'll get Sunday mernin's breakfast. Estcourt is the very tiptop of Maine too! Camping will be point-to-point style, meaning that we will be in a different location each night... please plan accordingly. Plan to stop to get last minute supplies on Thursday in Greenville, Bingham, or Jackman depending on which direction you come in from. You'll be able to top off with gas-o-line at Pittston Farms (at a slightly higher than market value) on Thursday night/Friday morning. This will be a four day trip on and around Labor Day weekend 2015

PASSPORT IS A MUST! If you do not have a passport, you will need a travel card at the very least.

What: Northeast Overland's Makin' Bacon Adventure

When: Thursday, September 3rd to Monday, September 7th, 2015

Where: Somerset, Piscataquis, Aroostook, & Penobscot counties in Maine.

    Meeting Location: Check-in will be at Pittston Farms 4-7pm on Thursday, Sept. 3rd. (N45 53.621 W69 57.886)

What to bring: Your street legal and well maintained 4WD vehicle, warm clothing, basic extrication equipment, camping/sleeping provisions, food/water/fuel, spare parts/tools/knowledge, camera/batteries, etc. We will not quiz you on your stuff, you are responsible adults.

    Required Equipment:
      • 5 tires & tools to change a flat (this means a full-size spare (5 tires of the same size))
      • Front and rear tow points
      • Properly tuned & working CB radio
      • Fire extinguisher
      • First aid kit
      • Fuel containers (10 gallons minimum)
      • 2013 or newer Maine Atlas & Gazetteer
      • At least one GPS per vehicle (handheld recommended, street is ok)
      • Basic tool kit

Recommended Equipment (in addition to the required list):
      • Another full-size spare tire (for a total of six of the same size)
      • Tire repair kit, and/or compressor
      • Spare parts for CB/Ham (radio, mic, cord, antenna)
      • Vehicle specific parts + tools
      • Warm clothing & rain gear
     • inReach
      • Toilet paper
      • Winch or come-along
      • Shovel, Hi-Lift, straps
      • Bring an article of blaze orange... We want you to be found if you wander off.

Ride Fees: Non-refundable $100 per vehicle (not per person!). Tickets on sale now. There is only a 10 vehicle limit, so be sure to get your spot!

NMW Fees: We will be travelling through the North Maine Woods for 3 days & 2 nights. There is a fee for access and camping in the North Maine Woods. For this trip; Maine residents: $41, Non-residents: $60  (Fri day/Fri night, Sat day/Sat night, and Sun day) Fees are per person and collected at the checkpoint as you pass. CASH ONLY! For fee schedule and other information, check out the North Maine Woods website

What to Expect: We will be traveling mostly on well-built logging roads and some old grown-in roads (Some more closely resemble ATV trails). 4WD is required, bring something with high ground clearance and skid plates. This area is very remote and that needs to be respected. No cell service, no parts stores, complete self-reliance. We will be travelling in one group, possibly two to three depending on the dust conditions. This is for your safety. Generally the roads can be very dusty if dry or very muddy if wet (surface only, from the wet dust/silt. Think slushy). Some of the lesser quality side roads may have very poor and unstable surfaces (read: you will sink to your frame before you can say "oops!"). Mud terrain tires are preferred due to the terrain, though a fairly aggressive All Terrain tires will suffice. 31" - 33" are the norm. We highly recommend that you bring two spare tires...flat tires are not unheard of.

Expect to be sharing some of the roads with large over-sized, over-weight, speeding logging trucks that will not move from the center of the road as this is their territory. A GPS used incorrectly can send one off-course. Please familiarize yourself with whatever you will be using. Cell phones are useless in Northern Maine and cannot be relied upon. Other navigation tools: a 2013 or newer Delorme Maine Atlas and Gazetteer, a handheld GPS, a compass can always come in handy to find your back to the rig after a session of "nature calls"..

Daily routes will be gone over at every driver's meeting around supper time each evening. Plan on being in the woods from Thursday night to Sunday mid-mernin. We'll be going through civilization Sunday then back in the woods one more time for Sunday night camping. Plan on parting ways Monday mid-mernin in Greenville, Maine.

Inter-rig communication will be by CB radio on Channel 16. Please have your antenna's tuned for optimum distances! This could be crucial if the roads become dusty and we need to spread out in between vehicles. Ham radio operation is also encouraged. Please let us know if you'll be hamming it up on this trip!

Gah!! This sounds amazing! Unfortunately I've got long-standing labor day traditions which preclude my participation, but nice work on coming up with some creative "theme based" adventures. I love it.

I think it is doable with a stock rig but you may just end up taking a few different off chutes that will direct you around places you may not end up wanting to take the truck. All our trucks are very well outfitted so getting you out wont be a problem if you do decide to make a go of a spot that might give your truck a little trouble.

You'll definitely want to make sure you meet the minimum requirements and be aware that some Maine pin stripping may/will occur. The recommended requirements are for your benefit as well others. Not sure what you have for tires, but regular street tires won't cut it. A decent set of All Terrains would best be suited for this. Your truck probably came with Load Range "C" or "D" tires, but the latter would be better or even "E" Range tires for long lasting durability. But yes, those that are going will NOT leave anyone behind and we will all make it one way or another Wink This ride will be quite the adventure and we all want to have a good time exploring, watching wildlife and eating bacon!!

Although this adventure will have some challenging area's, we will not be leaving anyone behind and if need be, allow people the option to divert around these areas for lesser equipped vehicles or those who don't want to take the chance. This adventure has some amazing fishing spots and scenic views, so don't miss out!

Just an FYI, for those still on the fence about going, you can expedite your passport card and get it within 2-3 weeks. That leaves plenty of time to get one  Wink   If you still want to go, and you have neither a passport nor a passport card, don't fret, you can still go! There will be others enjoying this fine adventure who DO have theirs and would more than happy to get you some bacon while you chat up the border guards Northeast Overland's Makin' Bacon Adventure Sheriff

It's not a matter of leaving the US, it's a matter of getting back in now. You don't need a passport book, where a passport card will suffice for the travels of Northeast Overland. This card is needed to re-enter the US from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

We're down to less than 2 weeks away and a few wrenches have suddenly been thrown into our works. As of late, we can NOT go into Canada via Estcourt or even St. Pamphile during the weekend days or holidays. This really defeats the name and the purpose of our ride. So we came up with a few options and have conjured up another kick-ass adventure we're sure you'll enjoy!

A few changes in the requirements are as follows:
    >A passport card is not needed however we will be travelling near Coburn Gore and can access Canada thru there if so desired.
    >Fuel containers carrying a minimum of only 5 gallons (was 10 gallons)

    >The starting/meeting point shall remain the same; Pittston Farms 4-7pm on Thursday, Sept. 3rd. (N45 53.621 W69 57.886)
    >Camping will still be point-to-point style.
    >The end location shall be in the greater Rangeley area.
    >We'll be traversing near a few waterfalls that we'll hike into, a few wind farms to park under and will have some great vantage points for scenic views and wildlife.

We hope those who wanted to go on an awesome adventure will still join us as we still have a few spots left!
