Re: Just Plain Nawth
Just finished breakfast at Auntie M's in Greenville. 2 eggs over easy, bacon, toast and coffee. Of course I saved two slices of bacon for Maliki... Only took 2 hrs 15 minutes to get here. Headed up thru Kokadjo, up around the dam and then down thru Pittston Farm. Weather should be decent today!

I was surprised I was able to get a text to you today, and that you were able to reply, musta been a weather anomaly.

I'm thinking the lack of foliage helped too.

Re: Just Plain Nawth
Full trip report with photo's coming soon.
Short; 19 hours, 400 miles, saw 5 deer, 5 pahtridge, 3 moose, 1 ginormous beaver, 1 confused rabbit, and oodles of red squirrels as big as our grey squirrels.
No flats (love my KM2's ) and no carnage. It snowed, I used 4 wheel drive on some muddy side roads, had pie at Pittston Farm (surprised?) and it will be one of the best remembered trips with Maliki.

Re: Just Plain Nawth
Here's a taste of the beginning...
I got up around 2:30a and started getting ready. Some of the Jeep was already packed from the night before, but I needed to make us lunch and pack some tasty snacks. Pups and I left around 3:15a for the North Maine Woods. We travelled the normal route to Greenville via Farmington where we topped off with 91 octane at Irving. Then thru New Vineyard, North Anson, up thru Bingham to Abbot Village on Rt. 16 and then up Rt. 15 thru Monson where the Irving was open already. The first sighting of any wildlife was on Rt. 15 just south of Greenville where a decent size buck was on my ditch-side heading into the woods but stopped briefly to watch me zoom by.
I rolled into Greenville around 5:30a and stopped at a dark and desolate Indian Hill Trading Post. Conveniently tho, the Irving pumps were open 24/7 as long as you pay at the pump. I squeezed some more 91 octane into my 20 gallon tank and we were off again. But we were early. Way early. Legal hunting didn't start for another hour plus, and Kokadjo was only 30 minutes away. Fortunately Auntie M's was open. This is a nice little breakfast nook located across from Kelly's Landing where they keep the Katahdin boat. I noticed the time as I pulled a chair up to the counter, 5:37am. There were many other “hunters” in the diner and I listened closely to their plans of where they were going, hoping to not travel the same roads as them. 2 eggs over easy, raisin toast, bacon and of course, coffee; deeelicious! I grabbed a coffee to go to top off my thermos and then let Maliki out to wizzers around the park and he proceeded to try and mark every bush and tree. Once he hopped back in I then gave him half the bacon and some water. Noticing I was short on cash, which is never a good idea when you venture off into the great North Maine Woods, I stopped and grabbed a few bucks from the local atm. Now up the Lily Bay road into Kokadjo where daylight was starting to make an appearance. Once I hit dirt I started to get all situated for the day. Donned my orange, (Maliki too) brought the ole Charles Daly 20g pump up front along with a few shells. But it still too dark to my liking even tho legal time was present. I poked along for a bit to get my eyes accustomed to the slow progress and let the other hunters fly by me. The Greenville Rd (which turns into Sias Hill Rd) had some random spots of washboard so I decide to adjust my suspension by airing out the KM2’s down to 24 psi. Muchos betteros.
Along the way I came across this "trash tree":
Not really sure I understand the theory behind this, but I stopped to "shoot" a picture anyways...
I must of hit just about every side road en-route to the Golden Road w/out seeing anything. Well, except for some remnants of 8 birds that had been “dressed” by the old gate.
The view Northwest just after the gate:
Just down the road from the old gate was some water covered roads, well frozen water..
Shortly after the old gate I hung a left onto the old Grant Farm Homestead (well, where it used to be) and travelled west towards Ragged Lake onto one of the roads. Near the beginning of the road there was a snomadoo marker at one intersection guiding snow travelers.
